Just a quick post to share a nice overview of Northwest Montana’s breweries and distilleries…
“1 week. That’s the answer to how long it takes to visit all of Western Montana Glacier Country’s breweries and distilleries, which numbers 21 breweries and 5 distilleries.” Click here to take a tour!
“The Kodiak” is going on our summer menu! It’s our Grappa shaken with cold brew coffee and house made vanilla simple, inspired by Kodiak, one of the distillery dogs. Cheers!
Been a while since I’ve sat down and put the fingers to the ole keypad…we have been busy busy here at The Whiskey Barn what with the expansion and summer rapidly approaching (didn’t we just celebrate New Years?) we barely have time to stop and sip the whiskey–ok, ok that’s a lie we always make time for that. We have finally settled into our new space, worked through the kinks of operating two stills while mashing and barreling, and added some delightful new spirits to our product line–if you haven’t stopped in for a visit since the remodel you are missing out! We doubled the size of the distillery and added a new processing area and barrel room. Did I mention we also expanded the tasting room into the production area? Oh yea. You can sip a cocktail whilst gazing upon Isabelle, our pretty alembic Congnac still–she has an exotic and sultry beauty about her and has been making some damn fine brandy.
We are gearing up for Summer 2014 and top of the list is crafting the famous Whiskey Barn Cocktail Menu! This year I have decided to pass the creation of this beautiful beast of a menu on to you fine folks. Here’s how this all works:
- You cruise over to our FB page and like us https://www.facebook.com/glacierdistilling
- You get creative in the kitchen (fresh ingredients, syrups, or keep it simple–however you like to mix it up)
- Once you have crafted the most spectacular cocktail you head back to our FB page and add your recipe to a comment on our COCKTAIL CONTEST post
We will recreate your recipes and pick our favorite(s) to add to our Summer Cocktail Menu (you will also be showered lavishly with swag and prizes). This is a lovely excuse to spend an afternoon drinking whiskey all in the name of creative expression. You’re welcome. Contest ends Monday, May 26th.
Some Save the Dates:
Saturday, June 7th is our annual Moonshiner’s Ball at The Stonefly Lounge in Coram!! Shake your stuff to the boot scootin’ sounds of Moonshine Mountain, sample our newest whiskey release Fireweed Cherry Bourbon and grub out on some stuffed jalapeños and pulled pork sandwiches from Oso Catering. This year we decided to spice up the evening with an overalls fashion show–dress in your best, or worst, overalls and strut your stuff on stage for the chance to win a summer of free cocktails* at The Whiskey Barn.
Saturday, June 14th The Historic Belton Chalet is hosting a whiskey dinner, with a twist. Instead of a traditional cocktail pairing, Chef Melissa will be pairing four courses with different Glacier Distilling whiskeys and brandies served up straight or on the rocks. As we move through the menu you will have the option to choose one of the spirits to be crafted into a cocktail–a choose your own adventure of sorts. Father’s Day is Sunday the 15th and what better way to celebrate Dad than with local whiskey and fresh food? Chef’s pairings are always next level and reservations book fast so call today to reserve your spot 406.888.5000.
WHERE HAS OUR WHISKEY TAKEN YOU!?
We are adding a cork board to our tasting room decor and are hoping to adorn it with pictures of you getting out and getting after it! Send us your photos of folks enjoying our spirits in the great outdoors, or repping Glacier Distilling while shredding the gnar or slaying a trout. Email photos to firstname.lastname@example.org or send them the old fashioned way to PO Box 593, West Glacier, MT 59936

A big Thank You! to all the folks who visited us over the 4th of July weekend—some of our busiest days to date and we couldn’t be more grateful for your support or pleased with our amazing staff this year! Kendra is the lady behind most of the cocktail magic these days and she certainly knows how to get creative with local ingredients. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Miss Kendra, here she is proudly displaying our two new Flathead Cherry-based products.
Both the Little Cottonwood and Daughter of the Sun are cherry-based spirits distilled from lapin cherries grown at the Lorange Orchard in Yellow Bay, MT. The Little Cottonwood was redistilled (think gin-style) with orange peel, ginger and cardamom so the cherry flavor sits on the backburner and the warming ginger and spicy cardamom are cooled with a touch of added sweetness—sparkly and refreshing with ginger beer or, my personal favorite, floated on top of a gin and tonic. Daughter of the Sun is a cherry brandy that was first aged in a whiskey barrel, finished in a used Syrah barrel and brightened with a splash of cherry juice—Nic showcases this lively libation in his cocktail The Fisherman’s Direct…ask for it by name.
Although the days are once again getting shorter there is still much summer to be had and we would love to hear about your adventures over a cocktail or two! Coming soon…a photo board in the tasting room where we will share photos of folks getting outside and l-i-v-i-n, like our friend Heather sporting her Real Women Drink Whiskey shirt while hiking Logan Pass to earn some summer turns! Show us how you ‘Dew’ it and you might just land yourself on our wall of fame.
Here’s to summer!
Summer is in the air at The Whiskey Barn. Each summer seems to pass even quicker than the last, so I’m certain we will blink and the cottonwood trees will be turning a dusty yellow. Every season brings a different turn and this time of year you can feel energy mounting. As our mint pushes its way through the earth after a restful winter, I am reminded of how much of our life is cyclical—we spent last week planting herbs and berries that will make their way into specialty cocktails and this week harvesting barrels. The planting and the harvest. Each barrel we fill is a seed planted—we watch the barrels ‘grow’ and mature, we sing to them (musical selection differs greatly depending on who runs the still), we cultivate them and we hope that you can feel that love and care when you share a bottle with friends around the campfire. Enough waxing poetic.
Down to business. Let me answer the question that has been pressing on all of your minds: When will that beautiful, spunky babe Cracker Jack the Whiskey Yak be returning to the distillery? Any day now! We moved her corral up the hill a ways to provide more natural shade, which as fate would have it does wonders for her curly locks. Our mascot returns! If you’ve never met CJ, make a point this summer to swing by and give her a good scratch.
We have some fun events and tastings planned this summer:
Whiskey Dinner at The Historic Belton Chalet
On Friday, June 14th Chef Melissa will be pairing five dishes with our whiskeys and whiskey cocktails. The event begins at 6:30 and reservations are required (preferably by 6/12) 406.888.5000
Moonshiner’s Ball at The Stonefly Lounge
Our 2nd annual summer kick-off party will be on Saturday, June 15th at The Stonefly in Coram (across the street from The Whiskey Barn). This year’s theme is bootlegger—think 1920s speakeasy/rum runner. Piggyback BBQ will be setup out front serving pulled pork sandwiches, The Lil’ Smokies will be getting people dancing and the Rum Runner Race starts at 8pm. Lots of prizes including a summer of free cocktails for the best-dressed guy or doll! Here’s to another great year in the Flathead Valley, we hope you will come celebrate with us!
Save the Date
August 8th Glacier Park Weddings will be hosting a dinner party pairing our whiskeys and brandies and Great Northern Brewing beers with the culinary creations of Mr. Tim Good’s Cuisine Machine (he catered our Autumn Equinox dinner last fall). Dust off the dancin’ shoes and bring your appetite! Details to follow.
We have a great crew this summer and already the parking lot has been a rotation of cars toting paddle boards, bikes and rafts—with The Going to the Sun Road opening any day now skis will soon be back in the mix—brings a smile to this gal’s face, people living fiercely and I love it.
We look forward to visiting with you over après adventure cocktails—here’s to living!
W hen the sun tucks away and the snow piles up, admittedly not as much this year as in years past, Cabin Fever takes hold. Folks in The Canyon have our own remedy for this stir-crazy feeling. Sure it involves a healthy dose of whiskey, which usually leads to mountain man competitions, arm wrestling matches and bar stool races down Sugar Hill–but more importantly, Cabin Fever Days is a time for our Gateway to Glacier communities to come together in support of our local QRU units, Volunteer Fire Department, food bank and Headstart organizations Cabin Fever Days celebrated its 35th year on February 8-10 (although rumor has it impromptu winter bar stool races have a much longer history in the canyon). Although The Whiskey Barn has only been around for these last two years, we are proud to saddle-up on a bar stool throw ourselves into the arm wrestling ring and open the distillery doors for tastings and whiskey cocktails that’ll warm ya up and have you bustin’ moves on the dance floor all night!
